International Students
NZMSA International Medical Student Welfare Webpage
Studying medicine in a foreign environment and at times in a different language can be a challenge. It is important to look after your wellbeing and part of this is knowing what support and services are available for you. International student support is available at all 4 campuses around New Zealand, some of which students may not be aware of. Below is a reference guide to what resources are available at each centre to help you feel more supported and make the most out of your time at medical school – whichever campus you’re on.

2. English Language Support
Communication skills are vital in becoming a good and competent doctor but often overlooked. It is not unusual to experience language barriers coming from a foreign environment, especially for students who do not speak English as their primary language. Therefore, we strongly encourage you to seek help if you need to.
English lessons have helped many students increase their language proficiency not just in casual conversations but also at an academic level such as writing essays and oral presentations. These can be flexible to suit your busy schedule and funded by the university. Some centres also run communication workshops which have helped students improve their confidence for OSCEs.

Trainee Intern transition into House Surgeon: After you’re offered a job by the ACE scheme, you will need to apply for a work visa along along with medical registration applications. Information is usually sent to you around mid-year by your school. If not please contact your local campus. This can be a lengthy and complicated process, so for visa application contact your university’s visa co-ordinator and check out www.immigration.govt.nz/migrant/general/formsandfees/formsandguides/work.html
4. Health Insurance, Healthcare & Counselling
Whether it be your physical or mental health, seek help when in need.
In New Zealand, it is important to find yourself a GP (General Practitioner) as they will help manage most of your health care concerns. Check your insurance policy to see what health care and counselling services you are covered for. If you are claiming back from your insurance company you will have to pay the full amount yourself, keep the receipts and make a claim. Some campuses offer a subsidy scheme for all medical students. If you are unsure, ask your university’s international student insurance office or your local international support staff member.

6. Frequently Asked Questions
NZMSA has heard the concerns of international students on several issues which seem to be frustrating, in particular access to the TI grant, and being ineligible for the first ACE match. Unfortunately we have not gained traction on these issues, but are hoping to improve the access to first year jobs for New Zealand trained doctors. Here is a short explanation of the issues at hand and why they may be difficult to change.
The Trainee Intern Grant was developed as part of a debt relief scheme for New Zealand students with a government loan, rather than being payment for services delivered in TI year. It is designed to reduce debt and thus improve retention of junior doctors. If you don’t have a student loan, it is difficult to argue for a grant to offset it.
The first match of the ACE scheme exists because of current immigration laws which mean that the first year house surgeon jobs must be offered to New Zealand and Australian citizens first.
If you have any further comments or questions please feel free to contact your NZMSA
International Representative.

A menu of ideas for cultural and non-alcoholic events for your event planning interest. Some have been run successfully by local student executives while others somewhat more imaginative!
